Honoree: Joanie Malis
Honored by: Susan G. Komen Orange County
Cause Area: Healthcare
Joanie started volunteering with our Affiliate in October 2003 and has been a core Komen volunteer for over 12 years. In 2010 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and is a 5 year survivor. Joanie has continuously helped when we needed her to represent Komen out in the community at health fairs and other events including Wacoal’s annual Fit for the Cure in-store events. Then in 2010 she joined us in the office helping with bulk mailing projects, Race preparation work and making beaded keyrings for outreach use. She also started volunteerin
g at our reception every Monday and has been doing this consistently for the past 5 years – greeting guests with her lovely smile, helping people who call for breast health referrals, entering data into Raiser’s Edge and updating spreadsheets and forms for all our programs. On her Monday shifts she also assists women who come in for a free wig appointment. Her warm and friendly personality helps them feel calm and comfortable and they always leave feeling like they received great service and emotional support from Joanie. Joanie is one of our core volunteers. She helps in any way she can and her quiet but persistent commitment to our Affiliate and our cause is commendable and very much appreciated. It is a pleasure having Joanie as a part of our team. Joanie was selected as our Affiliate’s 2016 Volunteer of the Year.
