It is with great pleasure that the Ocean Institute recognizes Marty Sorkin as our 2015 Volunteer of the Year in honor of his outstanding leadership and dedication to our organization, the community, and his fellow volunteers. Since 2002, Marty has been an extraordinary volunteer at the Ocean Institute, donating more than 5,000 hours of service. His time has benefited multiple departments and his positive energy and passion for the Ocean Institute has had ripple effects across the Institute community and beyond. From the beginning of his time here, Marty has been a leader in our volunteer force, serving in a number of capacities, including creating and implementing a 6.5 hour Marine Ecology training course that is required of all incoming volunteers serving in our Education, Public Programs, Husbandry, and Tide pool Interpretive Docent departments. On average, we have 165 volunteers complete this program each year. In addition, Marty shares his passion for the Ocean Institute by recruiting new volunteers through monthly Open House events. His deep impact on the Ocean Institute can be seen most readily through the number of high quality and dedicated people who join the volunteer program because of his efforts. Marty created and implemented the Marine Ecology Program because he saw a need within the volunteer program and took it upon himself to address it. His self-driven passion expanded beyond training and programs to our facility itself. From building custom gold panning tables used by hundreds of students each year for our California State history programs, to completely revamping our technology systems campus-wide, Marty has made it his personal mission to help the Ocean Institute in any capacity. Marty donated his time and funding to incorporate technology into our educational and public programs. This has significantly increased our ability to teach thousands of students and public visitors through visual tools such as new television monitors and even wireless cameras that project the work of our instructors for the entire room to see. His efforts have extended to include our boardroom, allowing the Ocean Institute the perfect space for collaborative meetings through state of the art wireless technology. He has now launched his next phase of updating our conference center. In addition to donating his time to the Ocean Institute, Marty also serves as a Volunteer Naturalist at Crystal Cove State Park and at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. In addition, he conducts tide pool docent trainings for Laguna Ocean Foundation and the City of Dana Point. Marty is also an active presenter and speaker for nature centers in the southern California region and at OC Docent Day. We wouldn’t be the organization we are without Marty Sorkin!
