Honoree: Michele McGill

Honored by: Illumination Foundation

Cause Area: Hunger & Homelessness

Illumination Foundation would like to whole-heartedly nominate Michele McGill for the Spirit of Volunteerism Award for her tireless effort to bring desperately needed dental care to the medically fragile individuals experiencing homelessness. Since 2013, Michele has been working with IF’s Recuperative Care senior management to devise a way to offer Dental services to the homeless. Michele, having run her own successful dental practice in the past, was a force to be reckoned with. Not only did she renew her defunct dental license, but also researched homeless dental care needs/current offerings and procured all the equipment and dental supplies necessary. Donations of dental furniture, chair, autoclaves, and dental tools came from her colleagues; thoughtful purchases of high tech equipment (x-rays, tablets) married with low tech processes kept the startup costs well below budget. What started as a dream is now a realty; on Dec 1 2015, Michele opened the Dental program at IF’s Recuperative Care Center with little fanfare but with great joy. Since then, Michele has quietly provided weekly dental care ranging from general exams/cleaning, gross scalings and radiographs to more than 50 individuals who would not have had any access to such services. Michele is now working toward expanding the scope of services, by providing dentures and fittings. Not only an exceptional dentist, Michele is such a warm and caring presence that her dental chair is rarely empty. The Recuperative Care staff find the situation humorous; usually people have a tendency to be afraid of getting dental work done, however Michele is so caring and kind with the clients that they all ask to see her every week. It is very rare that you come across someone like Michele, who is a talented and personable dentist, who donates her skill and time every single week. She is more than just a dentist, she is a tireless volunteer, an excellent teacher to the clients and staff, a compassionate presence and staunch advocate for providing care to the underserved. We at Recuperative Care are truly blessed and thankful to have Michele as part of our team and wish to honor her and the important service she is providing as our nominee for the Spirit of Volunteerism Award. Client Testimonials “Michele is an exceptional person, and dentist. There is nothing bad to say about Michele. She explains everything that is going on. She is so knowledgeable it feels like a class.” “She’s very patient with the clients and she encourages you. She’s always complimenting you and makes you feel good. Great bedside manners, very professional, very sweet. She makes you feel comfortable and not scared while she worked on my teeth. I appreciate very very much everything that she did, thank you!” “She’s very good at calming your anxiety. She’s very warm and sweet.”
