Gene Campbell is the definition of volunteerism. After a long career in education, Gene took on the formidable task of training to become a state-licensed, volunteer counselor for the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) through the Orange County Council on Aging, where he provides unbiased information about Medicare and Medi-Cal to Orange County residents. Gene climbed and ultimately reached the pinnacle of the steep learning curve that is Medicare, and thirsted for more. So he volunteered also for the California Health Advocates Senior Medicare Patrol program, in collaboration with HICAP, where Gene educates Orange County Medicare beneficiaries, their families and their caregivers, on how to protect themselves from becoming victims of Medicare fraudulent billing. In both roles, Gene demonstrates exemplary leadership, camaraderie, and a zest for life that is admired by all. When Gene is on the premises, in the HICAP Call Center providing healthcare information to a confused senior, or conducting a presentation on Medicare fraud prevention at the local senior center, Gene’s infectious laugh can be heard throughout the facility. Gene’s contributions to both the Orange County Council on Aging HICAP as well as the California Health Advocates Senior Medicare Patrol program are deserving of our gratitude and recognition. His compassion, empathy and enthusiasm, regardless of the task at hand, are traits admired by all who work alongside him. Thank you Gene!!
