Honoree: Katherine Housley
Honored by: Assistance League of Santa Ana
Cause Area: Youth Services
Kay has been a member of ALSA since 1977, much longer than me, and many other members; however, it never ceases to amaze that she exudes such enthusiasm and energy for all of the countless jobs she has done, and is currently doing. Over the years, Kay has held jobs such as Chair of Operation School Bell®, our national philanthropy that provides uniforms, shoes, and backpacks to over 2,000 students in the Santa Ana Unified School District each year; Co-Chair and Treasurer of our Dental Center which provides low cost dental care to hundreds of students each year in grades K-12 in the SAUSD; Chair of Assisteens, our high school auxiliary, during which time it received the Disneyland Community Service Award; VP and Treasurer of the Katherine Irvine Auxilliary; and President of our chapter for two different years. Currently, and for the second year, Kay is VP of Resource Development, and is simultaneously Chair of our Thrift Shop, which is our main fundraiser, and Chair of our Spring Fundraiser, The Best Taste of Santa Ana. Kay spearheaded the formation of The Best Taste, and this May will be our third event. The first iteration of the event started out small and unassuming, and we basically broke even, but Kay has such a passion for this fundraiser, and combined with her lifelong residency in Santa Ana (she knows so many people!), she is basically unstoppable. Kay has gathered together so many restaurants, and community people, that the second event held last May, netted us much more profit, and may well prove to be a signature fundraiser for Assistance League. Over 700 people attended the event, where we had music, wine tasting, a silent auction, and other festivities, as well as the many local, old and new restaurants represented at the vibrant downtown location of The Best Taste. It was a special day, and it was primarily due to Kay’s vision and dedication that the event has become so successful. Of course, we have The Best Taste scheduled for May 21st this year, and we hope to see all of you there! Kay is involved in many other philanthropic endeavors, not the least of which is The Blind Children’s “Cooking with Vision” Board, Chairman of Orange Host Town for the World Special Olympics Games in 2015, and as Volunteer treasurer for First Congregational Church in Santa Ana. Kay is an inspiration to work with at Assistance League, and I honestly don’t think we’d be the same without her active, passionate involvement. Kay can be counted on in every way-she has a can do spirit, and boundless energy. Most importantly, Kay is a kind person that each of us should strive to be like in our own endeavors. Respectfully submitted, MaryAnn Hare President Elect, ALSA.
